Limoges
was founded in the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, 2000 years ago.
The city is a modern city, with 220.000 inhabitants, university, university Hospital, an airport with excellent connections, including a daily flight from London/Stansted .
The old quarter lies in the west of the city with half-timbered houses and narrow streets and its Cathedral of St.Etienne. Of course Limoges is well known for its porcelain -China-.produced from 1770
till today. There are three golf courses in the area, of which one is public, the other ones are semi-public
Bussiere-Galant
is well known for its "Velo-rail" , a trolley operated by pedal power on the
former railway track. The
Richard Lionheart Route
(Richard Coeur de Lion) brings you to Castles like
Chateau de Brie, Chateau de Nexon, the renowned village of Pompadour famous for its stud farm(haras)
racecourse, Chateau de Bonneval, the fortress Rochechouart, the nearby Château Montbrun with its surrounding moat (and welcoming tavern) to name but a few.
At Chateau Chalus-Chabrol, Richard Lionheart died in 1199.
The ghostly remains of the village
Oradour-sur-Glane
is a stark monument to a Nazi atrocity during the second WW. Almost all the 642 inhabitants were killed.
The area offers lakes like the
Lac de Vassivière
where you can swim, canoe and use the waterbikes.
The Limousin is an area of upland pastures, forestry and pure water, springing from the region itself or just a little higher in the Massif Central.
It is a green landscape, even in summertime, with an average temperature of 24 degrees celsius.
